Monumental Imaginaries – Donald Horne Building at the Tin Sheds Gallery
Insights, Press
We are delighted that the Donald Horne building has been selected for inclusion in Monumental Imaginaries, and exhibition at teh Tin Sheds Gallery opening 10th October.
One hundred and fifteen years ago, the City of Newcastle was so enthralled with coal it built a monument to it. Today, the Hunter region is at the centre of political and environmental debate about Australia’s energy future.
Monumental Imaginaries explores the complexities and contradictions of rapid energy transition in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. The exhibition positions this transition as not simply a technical problem but one with cultural and historical dimensions. It invites visitors to consider the scale of the transformations under way, its landscapes, buildings and visual media.
By looking at how energy transition has a visual culture, Monumental Imaginaries draws attention to the legacies of fossil fuel dependency and documents emerging green visions. The Donald Horne project will be described through photographs, models and drawings and sketches.
