Game-on in Alexandria
The Huntley Street Recreation Centre is a transformative adaptive reuse project that will convert a large-scale 1980s warehouse into a vibrant, multi-functional sport and community hub. Located in the heart of one of New South Wales’ fastest-growing urban precincts, the centre has been designed to support the expanding communities of Alexandria and Green Square.
Previously used as a carpet warehouse, the existing precast concrete structure will be reimagined into a contemporary facility for recreation, health, and community connection. The completed centre will feature four indoor multi-purpose courts, supporting a range of sports including basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, badminton, gymnastics, and pickleball. The facility has also been designed to accommodate accessible sports programming, with inclusive features for wheelchair users.
Complementing its sporting facilities, the centre will include reception and administrative areas, spectator seating, a kiosk, and modern change rooms. The upper level will provide 600 square metres of community space, including meeting rooms and flexible-use areas suitable for dance, classes, and other local programs. Outside, the site will feature landscaped areas, half courts, and fitness spaces, with an activated public forecourt providing a direct connection to the Alexandra Canal and the broader Green Links network. Bike parking and end-of-trip facilities will support active and sustainable transport options.
Environmental sustainability is central to the project’s vision. Over 95 percent of the existing building structure will be retained or repurposed as part of the new works. Significant remediation of the former industrial site is being undertaken, and rooftop solar panels will provide renewable energy to power the facility. The design maximises opportunities for natural light and ventilation, while rainwater will be collected, stored, and reused onsite for irrigation and other operations.
A defining architectural feature of the centre is its sculptural 80-metre awning, which provides sun protection while filtering natural light into the north-facing façade. This element enhances the thermal performance of internal spaces, including open-plan community areas, meeting rooms, and changing facilities, and gives the building a bold, contemporary identity.
Construction is currently underway, with completion scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
